Present Perfect Continuous – Results of an action

I'm tired because I've been running.

We use the present perfect continuous when the action has finished but we can still see or feel the results so, as with always in the present perfect, there is a connection between the past and present.

 

Examples

I’m tired because I’ve been running.
I’m not running now but I’m tired because a was running until a short time ago.

My eyes are red because I’ve been crying.
I’m not crying now but my eyes are still red because I was crying a short time ago.

I’m angry because I’ve been arguing with my boyfriend.
I’ve finished arguing with my boyfriend but I’m still angry because of the argument.
