The Verb to be

She is happy

The verb to be is the first verb to learn when you are learning English. It immediately allows us to give basic information about ourselves and other people.

He isn’t / he‘s not
She isn’t / She‘s not
It isn’t / It‘s not
We are
We aren’t / we‘re not

You aren’t / you‘re not

When we make a question, remember to invert the verb and the subject:

She is happy. (affirmation)
Is she happy? (question)

You are French. (affirmation)
Are you French? (question)

So with the verb to be we can make some useful questions and sentences.

Where are you from?
I’m from England.

How old are you?
I’m 21.

What‘s your job?
I’m a teacher.

Are you married?
Yes, I am.
