America: A Personal History of the United States Part 1

Level: Advanced - British English (with an American lilt!)

Alistair Cooke was an English man who spent most of his life in the United States. He presented his weekly radio programme "A Letter from America" on BBC radio from 1946 until just before his death in 2004. It was the longest-running speech radio programme in history and contained personal reflections on his adopted country.

In this listening comprehension exercise to help you improve your listening skills, listen to Alistair talk about what he knew about America before leaving England and his first impressions when he arrived, and answer the questions.

Watch the video and choose the correct answer.
